Learn how to do Tunisian crochet in the round in a tube with a double ended hook and use the free pattern below to make a beautiful project with textured hearts.
Use two contrasting colors if you want the hearts to stand out or use one color for a more subtle texture.
In this tutorial you will find videos that show you how to work Tunisian crochet in the round, two charts that you can follow to make the version you prefer (with or without the tiny crosses) and written instructions.
Worked up in a sport weight yarn, this is a quick and cute project to make as a gift.
Two bands of honeycomb stitch at the top and bottom of the cowl ensure that the fabric will not curl.
I also linked some more resources that you can use to learn how to make the stitches used in this tutorial.
The charts with heart motifs can also be used for working flat, to make a scarf, a bandana or a baby blanket, where you replace the other stitches with this stitch pattern.

Chart for Tunisian crochet cowl made in the round
There are two options for this pattern. I’m showing the one on the left in the video tutorial and in the written instructions, but if you want to skip the crosses you can use the second.
The charts show one pattern repeat that you repeat around horizontally and as many times as you want vertically.
The honeycomb sections are represented as a two-row repeat.
The chart on the left includes the crosses and the chart on the right consists only of hearts.
Follow the stitches for each row individually.
Choose the chart you prefer and only follow that one.
Start working from the bottom and reading each row from right to left, even if you are left handed.
The return pass rows are not shown on the chart.
Measurements for different cowl sizes
Check out the table for head sizes and finished sizes.
The sizes range between head sizes of 41 and 69 cm (between 16″ and 27″) with about 4-6 cm or 1.5-2.5″ ease.
The table provides approximate sizes for the height of the cowl.
You can work more or fewer rows of the pattern to change the height.
Pick your size based on your measurements and desired ease.

Observations
This cowl is worked in the round, using a double ended hook and one yarn for the forward pass, one yarn for the return pass.
When working in the round, you use two different yarns for the forward pass and the return pass. These are shown in instructions as C1 and C2, even if you use the same color for both.
Return pass instructions are provided once at the beginning of the project. You repeat these as needed, when there are enough loops on the hook.
You can make the cowl taller or shorter by varying the number of main pattern row repeats that you do. Do not remove the 8 rows at beginning and 8 at the end of the pattern.
The fit of this cowl is relatively tight, so for a more relaxed cowl choose the next size up from your head measurement.
Make a gauge swatch before you start.
This pattern is worked over a multiple of 14 stitches. Each size has 14 more starting stitches than the previous one.
Loop counts are noted in the first round, after the — symbols. They should not change from one row to the next.
Gauge
19 Tks and 19 rows for a 10 cm by 10 cm square (4″ by 4″).
Make a gauge swatch by following these instructions.
Round 1. Ch 25, pick up 25 loops in the back bumps of the chains, R (26 loops)
Round 2. 24 Tks, Ls, R (26 loops)
Repeat Round 2 24 more times for a total of 26 rows.
Block the swatch by washing it and laying it flat to dry.
Measure a 10 by 10 cm (4″ by 4″) square in the middle of the swatch and count the stitches and rows.
If you get fewer stitches and rows, go down a hook size (0.5 mm), if available, and make another swatch.
If you get more stitches and rows, go up a hook size (0.5 mm), if available, and make another swatch.
Repeat the swatching process until you reach the recommended gauge. Make a note of the hook size used.
Tunisian crochet cowl in the round instructions
All sizes include 8 rounds of honeycomb stitch at the bottom and top of the cowl to prevent curling.
These instructions are belong to the chart on the left (see page 7).
Bottom edge
Start with C1 and a slip knot on the hook.
Round 1. Ch 83, 97 (111, 111) [125, 139], pick up 83, 97 (111, 111) [125, 139] loops — 84, 98 (112, 112) [126, 140] loops
Slide the loops along the hook to the other end and use C2 to do the return pass. Start with a slip knot on the hook. Slip the C2 loop through the first loop of Round 1.
Return pass: Rep [YO and pull through 2 loops on hook] until 3 loops are left. Slide the loops to the other end of the hook and continue in pattern.
Ensure that the first round is not twisted and continue with Round 2 in C1 by picking up the first loop in the first stitch of the round, on the edge.
Place a SM in the first loop of the round.

Weave in the ends and block in a rectangular shape.
The inside of the cowl will have the hearts highlighted in Tunisian purl stitches.
If you’d prefer that the fabric be reversible, you can replace the Tunisian reverse stitches in the pattern with Tunisian reverse purl knit stitches.
