Tunisian crochet asymmetrical rounded triangle shawl tutorial

The name of this asymmetrical rounded triangle shawl is inspired by Kyanite crystals, which come in various shades of blue, with elegant elongated crystals.

The distribution of the eyelets along the entire body of this elongated shawl also reminds of the inclusions in this beautiful gem.

The shawl grows from one point, with increases on one edge and decreases on the other edge.

The eyelets start and progress along one edge with decreases, while new columns are formed along the other edge.

The pattern repeat is easy and can be repeated as many times as you want for a small scarf or a large, cozy shawl.

You can use any weight of yarn, from lace to worsted, to get shawls of different thicknesses.

Light blue to dark blue asymmetrical rounded triangle shawl made in fingering weight yarn. The shape is more of a boomerang, with one edge longer than the other. There are rows of eyelets going across the fabric, in parallel to the longer side.

Shape and measurements

This shawl can be made larger or smaller, depending on the row you stop on or the yarn weight and hook size.

For a larger shawl, use thicker yarn with the recommended hook size, or continue working more pattern repeats.

The sample made in the mentioned yarn has 58 rows, including the edge, and measures 272 cm or about 108″ across the outer edge and 64 cm or 25″ in width, after blocking.

The pattern includes instructions for 12 more rows beyond those shown in the sample.

Observations

The project is worked from one point, in rows that grow on one end and decrease on the other end, also known as an asymmetrical rounded triangle shawl construction.

When you encounter an eyelet and need to make a Tss, insert the hook through the eyelet and draw up a loop.

After a YO, you always skip a stitch in this pattern.

Stitch makers are useful for keeping track of pattern repeats. Place each stitch marker in the last stitch of a repeat.

Repeats are shown in [square brackets].

Stitches worked in the same space are shown in {curly brackets}.

At the end of each row, after the — symbol, you have the loop counts for the current row after the forward pass.

The chart in the PDF version includes special symbols that are explained in the legend and the instructions accompanying the chart.

Gauge swatch

Gauge for this pattern is not essential, as you work until you run out of yarn.

If you want to get the same size as the sample (151 rows), make a gauge swatch by following these instructions.

Row 1. Ch 26, pick up 26 loops in the back bumps of the chains, R

Row 2. 25 Tss, Ls, R

Repeat Row 2 another 23 times for a total of 25 rows. Measure a 10 by 10 cm (4″ by 4″) square in the middle of the swatch and count the stitches and rows.

19 stitches by 18 rows should measure 10 cm.

If you get fewer stitches and rows, go down a hook size (0.5 mm), if available, and make another swatch.

If you get more stitches and rows, go up a hook size (0.5 mm), if available, and make another swatch.

Instructions

Setup rows.

Start with a magic ring. Here is how to start a Tunisian crochet project in a magic ring.

Row 1. 3 Tss in MR, R — 4 loops

Row 2. 2 Tss, {Tfs, M1} in last Sp, Ls, R — 6 loops

Bind off by making a slip stitch in each stitch. Block to remove the curl.

Tunisian Crochet kyanite shawl - after Row 8 of the pattern repeat

After you made one pattern repeat, this is what your project should look like, ready for a new pattern repeat.

Tunisian Crochet kyanite shawl laid flat after one pattern repeat, showing 2 columns of eyelets going parallel with the right side, and the beginning of a new column of eyelets on the far left side.

Once you are finished with your shawl, whether you reached your desired size or you ran out of yarn, stop on an even row.

Bind off by making a slip stitch in each stitch.

Block to remove the curl, if needed.
